Knology broke ground on their new cable plant last week in the Moores Mill area in Auburn, Alabama. The addition of another cable provider is big news for the area that has suffered under a monopoly cable power for years. AT&T is the only other provider in the area (besides cable) and they only offer standard phone and “high speed” internet up to 6/512 in select locations. Needless to say, most residents get their internet from Charter Communications. Overall, Charter provides a decent product but tends to lag behind the nation with updates and speed increases. The addition of another provider should force Charter to begin upgrading to DOSCIS3 and compel them to offer more competitive pricing and better customer service. Personally, I’ve waited in line at the local franchise to get a new box for 30 minutes. My biggest pet pieve with Charter is they seem to schedule maintenance work around midnight local time- which also happens to be when most assignments are due on Blackboard. When my internet cuts out at 11:57pm and my assignment is due at 11:59, I don’t have a lot of options.

The Knology network will be primarily fiber, also known as Fiber to the Node, with coax distribution from their to the DMARC on the customers home. At the press event, Knology promised to only put 80 homes on a node which they claim is much less than their competition. I hope this means when everyone fires up their hulu streaming, limewire, and torrents around 9pm at night the internet won’t bog down as much. The system is supposed to be DOSCIS3 so they have the advantage of downstream channel bonding. There wasn’t any talk of upstream channel bonding, but I hope that its in the works so they can offer some symmetrical or nearly symmetrical options in the future.

The podcast features much of this same information direct from the Knology representatives that were in Auburn for the groundbreaking event.

Broadcasting has been a personal hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. When I was younger I wanted to be a weatherman. Since then, I’ve been interested in TV production and broadcasting. In this series, I take a look at local broadcasters in the Chattahoochee Valley region, especially the public broadcasters. In this first episode, I interviewed Al Colley, the Auburn Cable Engineer who’s been in the ETV building (also home to AU Cable) for more than 30 years. Al is a wonderful person to talk to and will tell you all about anything you want to know about and then some! As I interviewed him, I could tell his memories of the old days of ETV were fond ones. He loved being a part of real TV taking place. The building is now a satellite uplink center and production house for the college of business- a lot less exciting than the old days! Nonetheless, Al shares all the history of Auburn University’s ETV in this podcast. (This podcast series is for my class “Producing Podcast” at Auburn University)
